Beck - Midnite Vultures

A welcome return for the funkmaster himself. He is a black hole of inspiration (like Bob Dylan) who brings out enjoyable records. To be honest, my first impression of Midnite Vultures was 'My God! I always knew Odelay was a double album!'. Second impression was still the same, third the same, man, Midnite Vultures should've been classed as disc number two of Odelay. The sound's a bit more high-tech but more of the same ideas. But, if you like modern sounds, buy this. Why? Because Beck's a blender, a sign that says 'Originality's Not Dead'.

From the titles of the tracks alone, 'Nicotine & Gravy', 'Mixed Bizness', 'Peaches and Cream' or 'Milk & Honey' you know that nothing's taken too seriously. Chillout and go for a mind trip.

Innovation is the way forward. Technology can certainly improve the sound of records, and it pays dividend in tracks such as 'Get Real Paid' or 'Milk & Honey'. Unfortunately, where Midnite Vultures fails is that there's no real amazing, catchy, song. Other than that, well, it won't set you on fire but happily cool you down.
