From what I've read, Evil Empire was put down compared to RATM's debut album. But from the opening track, People Of The Sun, it gives a more powerful impression (not as if I found their first album impressive). Louder instruments and louder vocals from De La Rocha.
Vietnow is one of my favourite RATM songs, with funky lyrics, the voice working well with the instruments, 'Is all tha world jails and churches?', indeed.
Track five, Snakecharmer, starts off with a brilliant riff as the voice builds up, but by this time I'm already wondering at the level of angst shown in music. But how else can you be a political band?
Following track, Tire Me, is more of the same, 'We're already dead' seems to be the underlining message (should be an anthem for most pop music these days).
To finish off, Year Of The Boomerang, sounds more heavy metal in its combination of heavy guitars and shouting for an explosive finale.
The reason I think Evil Empire's underrated is because I enjoyed it more than RATM's debut. It's got more vigour, but its lasting appeal remains in doubt. Unfortunately, it didn't make me want to get up and destroy Big Brother. Maybe next time boys. Keep up the angst funk.
