There are some things in life itching to be cleared up (that sounds like a Radiohead lyric). One of these is the popularity of Radiohead. In whatever poll Radiohead comes up nearly as popular as The Beatles. It's true, though, that they epitomise the 1990s, lost and completely pointless.
What's always interesting is their use of guitars and electronics. Has that rock quality and yet it's up to date and finely polished. What's always off putting to me is their arty, fussy image and excruciating statements (cloning etc).
The highlights of The Bends: can't really say because it's all in the same vein. Angst art - the sort of thing that's enjoyable when first heard but makes you want to puke.
Only thing that I can suggest is that people become obsessed with this kind of repetitive drivel and so put it on a pedestal. Just consider one thing: at the same sort of time a band called Nirvana released a gut-wrenchingly powerful album called In Utero.
